EN ISO 15797\r\nWorkwear for washing with industrial laundries<\/h1>\r\nThe international standard UNI EN ISO 15797<\/strong> outlines the equipment to be used and the required tests for workwear<\/strong> (including PPE) to determine their suitability for industrial washing and drying<\/strong>. These tests encompass parameters such as dimensional stability, colour characteristics, creasing, seam wrinkling, pilling<\/strong>, and overall visual aspects.<\/span>\r\n

\"lavatriciWhy industrial washing is important<\/h2>\r\nIt is imperative to properly wash and dry all garments, especially certified ones<\/strong>, during maintenance to ensure that their performance characteristics remain intact over time.<\/span>\r\n\r\nProtective workwear, particularly if constructed from treated fabrics, possesses decay properties. Consequently, the maximum number of washing cycles<\/strong> allowable is indicated on the garment labels<\/span>\r\n\r\nIndustrial laundries employ an electronic counting system (transponder chips or electronic labels<\/strong> applied to the garment) to monitor each garment’s individual wash cycles.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nAnother significant service<\/strong> offered by industrial laundries is sanitation<\/strong>. Hospitals, hotels, and restaurants, for instance, rely on industrial laundries to meet the hygiene standards required for their respective industries<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n

The washing process<\/h3>\r\nThe EN ISO 15797 standard includes a table for reference in washing and drying instructions:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

  • The first classification (1 and 2) governs the treatment of white workwear or garments with delicate-coloured decorations<\/strong>. Washing is carried out at a temperature of 75\u00b0C using peracetic acid<\/strong> as a bleaching agent.<\/span>\r\n\r\n <\/li>\r\n \t
  • The second classification (3 and 4) defines a process suitable only for white workwear<\/strong>, washed at temperatures around 85\u00b0C or 75\u00b0C depending on the load, and bleached with sodium hypochlorite<\/strong>. A reducing product (e.g., sodium metabisulfite or sodium sulphite) is added during rinsing to eliminate chlorine residues.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t
  • The third classification (5 and 6) includes the washing of white workwear or garments with sensitive-coloured decorations<\/strong>, bleached with hydrogen peroxide<\/strong> at a temperature of 85\u00b0C.<\/span>\r\n\r\n <\/li>\r\n \t
  • The final classification (7 and 8) requires washing of\u00a0 coloured workwear<\/strong> without a bleaching agent<\/strong> at a temperature of approximately 85\u00b0C or 75\u00b0C depending on the load.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn all four classifications, the moisture content of garments after washing ranges from 50% to 55% for full-load washing and from 35% to 40% for light-load washing.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Detergents and bleaching agents<\/h3>\r\nThe EN ISO 15797 standard places significant emphasis on detergents and offers mainly two types: one containing optical brighteners<\/strong>, which should not be used when assessing colour characteristics, and one without optical brighteners<\/strong>.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe specific attributes of detergents<\/strong> are critical, necessitating traceability<\/strong> regarding the manufacturer, batch number, date, and production<\/strong>.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAs for the bleaching agents<\/strong>, they are all oxidising substances with chemical compositions specified by the standard itself: hydrogen peroxide<\/strong>, having moderate oxidising power, sodium hypochlorite<\/strong>, which aggressively affects colours and could cause significant shrinkage, and peracetic acid<\/strong>.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn all three cases, the bleaching effect results from the release of active oxygen<\/strong> (in the cases of peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide) and active chlorine<\/strong> (in the case of sodium hypochlorite) during use.<\/span>\r\n

    The drying process<\/h3>\r\nTwo drying methods are employed:\r\n
